EYEYAH! empowers youths and teachers with creative SCAMS Education
EYEYAH! has launched its 9th issue, SCAMS, to empower Singapore’s youth and educators against scams through creative education. Supported by Meta, SPF, NCPC, and CSA, it features visually engaging content, interactive activities, and educator toolkits to build critical thinking skills. Distributed free in schools, the initiative aims to promote scam awareness and safe online practices.
40,000 hard copies of this visually captivating ninth issue have been distributed for free to students through primary and secondary schools art clubs. In addition, educators from any institution may request an e-book version to distribute school-wide.
The publication is supported by an ‘Educator Toolkit’ for teachers to run image-led conversations in the classroom, empowering students to build critical thinking and observation skills.
Art and Design in the Fight Against Scams:
With scams becoming increasingly sophisticated, it’s more important than ever to equip youths with the skills needed to protect themselves.
● Engaging Visuals: Featuring illustrations by 18 artists from six countries, the 44 page publication uses a creative approach to demystify 13 different scam types including e-commerce scams, job scams, love scams, impersonation and QR code scams. Common misconceptions such as scams are littered with spelling mistakes are tackled and lesser known insights such as scam centres, trigger words and deep fakes are included.
● Interactive Activities: Fun activities like “Spot the Difference,” “Find the Hidden Items,” word searches, and mazes, encourage readers to slow down and observe — skills that are essential in identifying potential scams. Bite-sized prompts and open-ended questions encourage critical thinking.
Equipping Educators with Tools:
To support teachers in fostering critical discussions in the classroom, EYEYAH! has developed a series of ‘Visual Conversation Cards’ that utilize the illustrations from the publication. These cards, coupled with a visual thinking routine and thought-provoking prompts, encourage students to delve deeper into the topic of scams.
Commitment to Education:
Since 2022, EYEYAH! has partnered with more than 50 MOE primary and secondary schools, conducting assembly talks, teacher training, workshops, and curriculum redesigns. Additionally, they offer a series of 10 downloadable PSA-style posters that can be displayed in schools and other institutions (available from October 20 for free download at eyeyah.com).
Showcase at Digital for Life Festival:
EYEYAH! and Meta showcased their full range of SCAMS resources, including their Interactive SCAMS Game Booth, at the IMDA Digital for Life Festival held on 2–3 November at Bedok Heartbeat and 9–10 November at Vivocity. Educators had the opportunity to meet the EYEYAH! team and receive complimentary copies of all materials. The event was graced by two distinguished guests, Mr. Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information and National Development, and Dr. Wan Rizal, Member of Parliament for Jalan Besar GRC.
Together, we can equip our youth with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world confidently.
